My Leadership philosophy is closely aligned with my educational philosophy. I believe in a collaborative approach to leadership that utilizes a Socratic method of inquiry. It is through guided inquiry that I choose to tackle pedagogical goals. I have discovered that within any team there lies the talent, creativity and motivation to take on new challenges. My role as pedagogical leader is to inspire team members to tackle these challenges together.
By creating a Professional Learner Community, I work to encourage new leaders, who will exhibit the same qualities I expect of myself, integrity, honesty, accountability and transparency. Being a lifelong learner, I aim to motivate each member of the school community to become part of the Learning Community I work in.
STATEMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
My educational philosophy and what I feel my role is as the teacher are most closely related to constructivism. Constructivism is a student-centered philosophy where the student learns best through exploration and active learning. This places the student at the center of his or her learning. The student is encouraged to think and explain his reasoning during exploration. This philosophy fits into what the teacher does when planning lessons collaboratively using the Understanding by Design and IB frameworks. In practicing this, the teacher models each stage of learning his students will engage in; from questioning at the beginning of a unit to reflecting at the completion. In collaborative planning meetings, teachers ask, “How best will our students learn?” “How will we assess their understanding?” After a unit is taught teachers reflect on each aspect of it while the student reflects on his learning.
I believe in educating the whole child through a complete program that involves community service. This allows students the opportunity to develop their sense of belonging and responsibility in the global community.
